POTTERY KILN

The knowledge of the Ceramic Kiln is a significant and substantial area in Experimental Ceramics. The Modern Greek calls it kamini.

Vase paintings from the ancient era discovered during archaeological excavations in several regions of Greece provide information on their construction and use more generally.

Technical data
• The ceramic kiln consists of three areas

  1. From the location of the objects
  2. From the combustion area
  3. From the bouka, ie the space where the fuel is placed for burning.

• The door was built every time the kiln was used, it was broken as soon as the firing process was finished.
• Pottery kilns were built of clay and straw
• The sizes of the furnaces varied according to the type and size of the objects placed by the artisans.

I started experimenting with the creation of Ancient Fireplaces using the knowledge gained from the archaeological excavations. More than 15 furnaces have been built so far, either for usage in private areas or as exhibitions in archaeological sites.

Specifically:
• At the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
• At the Archaeological site of P. Pella
• At the Archaeological site of Vergina
• In the Archaeological site of Dios
• At the Center for the dissemination of sciences and Museum of Technology NOISIS in Thessaloniki, in the ceramic technology room
• And in several private spaces
